Inauguration of the General Wages Council and the National Labour Board
Labour and Social Protection CS, Dr. Alfred Mutua, inaugurated two important bodies that will strengthen harmony within Kenya’s labour sector: the National Labour Board, General Wages Council and Agricultural Wages Council. These councils, which were recently gazetted, will play key roles in addressing labour-related issues and determining fair wages for workers.
The National Labour Board, chaired by David Siele, will serve as an advisory body to the CS on all labour matters. The General Wages Council, under the leadership of Wakili Bernard Mung’ata, will be responsible for determining wages, a process that has faced delays in the past. One of their immediate mandates is to finalize the long-overdue 6% minimum wage increase, agreed upon during Labour Day in 2023. During the event held at the Ministry's headquarters, the CS directed the various entities to meet and present their proposals on this increase to facilitate their gazettement promptly.
Additionally, Dr. Mutua announced the gazettement of the Seafarers Wages Council, Protective Securities Council, reaffirming the government commitment to addressing wage issues across multiple sectors. Accompanied by Labour Principal Secretary Shadrack Mwadime, the CS emphasized that the councils would ensure fairness, protect worker rights, and contribute to a stable and prosperous economy.
