Labour and Social Protection CS Meets Aviation Sector Leaders at JKIA Amid Privatization Concerns

Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua held a crucial interactive session with representatives and leaders of the aviation sector, as well as select airport workers at Jomo Kenyatta International airport (JKIA) on Wednesday. The meeting was convened to address rising tensions and concerns among the workforce over alleged plans to partially privatize the airport.

In attendance were over 1,000 aviation workers, who had requested the meeting to voice their apprehensions directly to the CS. The session was held against the backdrop of reports suggesting that a private firm, Adani Group from India, is poised to take over the management of JKIA—a move that has stirred anxiety among employees.

Dr. Mutua, acting as an arbitrator in the ongoing dispute between the Ministry of Transport and the Kenya Aviation Workers Union, keenly listened to the grievances raised by the workers. The employees expressed their fears about the lack of clear communication regarding the proposed public-private partnership (PPP) and its implications on their welfare and job security.

"It is clear that the workers have not been fully informed about key issues that directly affect their welfare, particularly regarding the planned modernization of JKIA," said Dr. Mutua.

He acknowledged the spread of rumors due to inadequate communication and assured the workers that he would relay their concerns to the Ministry of Transport.

During the open session, the workers candidly shared their current challenges, fears, and concerns. Dr. Mutua briefed them on the government's ongoing initiatives and their rights as employees, emphasizing the need for transparent communication. He reassured the workers that all information related to the PPP program would be shared with them to ensure they are well-informed before making any decisions.

"I urge you to wait for the real information so that you can make informed decisions based on facts, not on rumors or propaganda," Dr. Mutua advised the workers. He also expressed appreciation for the workers' willingness to engage in the dialogue and for their patience during this period of uncertainty.

In a move to further address the workers' concerns, Dr. Mutua committed to organizing a follow-up meeting between the workers' union leaders and the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport early next week. He urged the workers to refrain from taking any drastic action until they have received all relevant documents and clarifications from their employer.

Dr. Mutua concluded the session by assuring the workers of his ministry's commitment to fairness, emphasizing that their rights and employment terms would be safeguarded throughout the process. He thanked the workers for their openness and for taking the time to share their vital concerns, promising to ensure that their voices are heard in the ongoing discussions about the future of JKIA.
